Steps to becoming a World Cup referee
Step 1:
Complete an Introductory Referees course and become a Club Based Referee. This takes six hours and courses are run at your own Club.
Step 2:
Qualify to be appointed to referee Federation games. Complete a Level One Referees Course, this involves knowledge of Laws of the Game with a theory test then a field test. The theory course takes 12 hours.
Step 3:
Qualify to referee Northern League Division two. You will be in your second or third year of refereeing senior football then complete a Level Two Referees Course. This involves more modules on the Laws of the Game with a further theory test, a fitness test then two field tests.
Step 4:
Qualify to referee Northern League Division One. A fitness test then approximately three regular field tests throughout the season.
Step 5:
Qualify to referee Northern League Premier Division. Further fitness tests and regular field tests throughout the season.
Step 6:
Qualify to referee National Youth League. Fitness test, one physical training session per week with monthly “beep” test, and regular field tests throughout the season.
Step 7:
Qualify to referee National League. Fitness test, one physical training session per week with monthly “beep” test and a minimum of five field tests.
Step 8:
Qualify to referee FIFA games. Have been a National League referee for at least two years, undertake fitness and field tests as required and be between 25 and 40 years of age in order to be nominated.
