What does the Youth Coaching Certificate Involve? – ‘Course of Learning’
The Youth Coaching Certificate at Level 2 introduces coaches to the modular learning system for learning and development, spanning the Youth age grades 12-19 years. This new system is designed to provide coaches with more flexibility in choosing a development and learning pathway that is relevant to their own needs and the needs of the players they coach.
Coaches will be presented with a spectrum of learning areas to choose from that will help them develop the requisite knowledge and skills to become a more effective Youth football coach. In 2008 New Zealand Football will offer only 1 module at Level 2 before steadily increasing the number of modules offered in 2009 and 2010.
What does Module 1 – ‘Game Day Coaching 9v9 to 11v11’ involve?
The Game Day Coaching Module aims to develop coaching effectiveness around the ‘Game Day’ environment ranging from providing coaches with strategies to promote player learning pre, during and post games. The module helps coaches to understand the principles that underpin effective play in the 9v9 and 11v11 formats.
As part of the course of learning coaches will be presented with opportunities to participate in and complete practical workshops and distance learning incorporating self development tasks (to be completed in their own coaching environment), covering:
- Understanding playing formats 9v9 and 11v11
- Using principles of play to guide player development and the development of basic tactics in the 9v9 and 11v11 playing formats
- Understanding strategies to support player learning on game days
- Developing strategies to link the game day and the weekly training programme
Module 1 of the Level 2 Youth Coaching Certificate can be achieved at either Silver or Gold Level. To achieve the Silver Level coaches must attend a four hour workshop and following the completion of this they are presented with the option of progressing to the Gold Level. The Gold Level can be achieved by completing and showing evidence of all the prescribed distance learning tasks.
Who is the course aimed at?
Coaches with the desire to increase their own effectiveness in supporting their players’ game understanding. Coaches who feel their players may require more support in the build up to, and during the game day. Finally coaches who want to increase their knowledge of effective game play in the playing formats their players’ experience 9v9 or 11v11.
