Level 2 - Junior Coaching Certificate

What does the Junior Coaching Certificate Involve? – ‘Course of Learning’

The Junior Coaching Certificate at Level 2 introduces coaches to the modular system for learning and development, spanning the Junior age grades 6-12 years.

This new system is designed to provide coaches with more flexibility in choosing a development and learning pathway that is relevant to their own needs and the needs of the players they coach.  Coaches will be presented with a spectrum of learning areas to choose from that will help them develop the requisite knowledge and skills to become a more effective junior football coach.  In 2008 New Zealand Football will offer only one module at Level 2 before steadily increasing the number of modules offered in 2009 and 2010.

What does  Module 1 – ‘Game Day Coaching 5v5 to 11v11 involve?

The Game Day Coaching Module aims to develop coaching effectiveness around the ‘Game Day’ environment ranging from providing coaches with strategies to promote player learning pre, during and post games, to helping coaches understand the principles that underpin effective team play in the 5v5 and 7v7 formats.  This course is specifically aimed at coaches working with 9 to 12 year olds.

As part of the course of learning, coaches will be presented with opportunities to participate in and complete practical workshops and distance learning. This incorporates self development tasks (to be completed in their own coaching environment), covering:

  • Understanding the three moments of the game
  • Understanding the 7v7 and 5v5 playing format
  • Understanding strategies to support player learning on game days
  • Developing strategies to link the game day and the training programme

Module 1 of the Level 2 Junior Coaching Certificate can be achieved at either Silver or Gold Level.  To achieve the Silver Level coaches must attend a 4 hour workshop and following the completion of this they are presented with the option of progressing to the Gold Level.  The Gold Level can be achieved by completing and showing evidence of all the prescribed distance learning tasks and attendance at a 2 hour  ‘Gold Level Summary Workshop’.

Who is the Course Aimed at?

Coaches with the desire to increase their own effectiveness in supporting their players game understanding. Coaches working with 9-12 year olds, who feel their players require more support in the build up to, and during the game day. Finally coaches who want to increase their knowledge of effective game play in the playing formats their players experience 5v5 or 7v7.
